There are multiple factors that decrease employee motivation exponentially. With top talent being at a loss and hard to retain in an organization we need to understand the root cause of such decreased job satisfaction. Our answer lies in morale. This blog is your A to Z to increase your team morale and therefore motivation.
What is motivation?
Motivation in the workplace is the drive, commitment and perseverance an employee embodies. As you may have understood, it is hard to track motivation and even harder to instill it. Since not every task can be interesting, companies are always finding new ways to keep their employees on track.
What is the importance of motivation?
While the idea of low motivation may not seem to be of high importance, it can fester an organization and eventually topple it. Among this, other reasons of its importance include;
- The rate of completion decreases
- Employees are unfocused
- Organization is unable to meet targets
How to increase motivation in the workplace?
1. Lead with vision:
A visionary always leads their team to success. If the team head is astray then the team will follow, hence the first step to increasing motivation is instilling these core principles within the leader themself.
2. Instill purpose in each individual:
By understanding the “why” of the organization the employee will be personally invested into their tasks. This transforms the team by ensuring that each individual is working toward a common goal.
3. Set achievable milestones:
By decomposing tasks into smaller, more achievable ones employees are conditioned to complete them more efficiently. Read more on how to master milestones here: “Your goal can be achieved with milestones. Here’s how to set them”
4. Acknowledge and reward achievements:
After setting milestones, ensure that hard work is rewarded. This shows employees that their work is recognized and is an incentive for them to achieve more.
5. Give your team independence:
By establishing some level of autonomy in the workplace, employees are allowed to invest some of their creativity in the task. This automatically increases motivation and interest.
6. Support staff wellbeing:
An employee who has just lost a loved one, or is in the middle of a heavy legal dispute will not perform well at the workspace- this is normal. By supporting staff wellbeing, they are allowed to transition in a healthy manner that will not affect future work related tasks.
7. Create a friendly workspace:
A workspace that invites employees to work is a workplace attuned to efficiency.
The main point to consider is instilling intrinsic motivation in your employees. As such, all individuals at the workplace should be a whole, not individual goals and visions. Such is the main equation to success.
